Where does the first part end? Odysseus (Matt Damon) finally escapes the island of Ogygia and washes up on the shores Ithaca.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: Athena (Zendaya) the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare and handicrafts answers Odysseus’s question about where he is; “Don’t you recognise your own home?”
First line of dialogue on the second part: “Just welcomes you strangers,” Eumaeus (John Leguizamo) greets a group of Penelope’s suitors.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, Odysseus has finally returned home to Ithaca after 20 years. Will he be able to retain his rightful place as ruler of Ithaca?
Which part is better? Both parts of the film have many redeeming qualities and differ from each other. The first half retells the Battle of Troy and Odysseus’s long journey home (which includes alot of mythology and monsters) and can feel like a series of separate chapters, as the scenes jump from past to present. The second half becomes more focused as Odysseus returns home and attempts to retain his leadership on the island of Ithaca. All in all, part one is visually impressive, but the second half is given a slight edge due to its suspense and satisfying payoff, which leaves a bigger impression overall.
