Where does the first part end? Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) makes contact with a five-legged alien from Erid he calls ‘Rocky’ (James Ortiz). Grace successfully uses echolocation to create a translation machine that interprets Rocky’s musical language.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: In an interior monologue, Ryland states; ‘Eridians don’t sleep like a human does. They seem legitimately paralyzed. If danger comes you can’t wake up. It’s a survival norm. Someone has to keep you safe.”
First line of dialogue on the second part: In a flashback scene prior to the Project Hail Mary mission, Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) makes introductions, “Flight team I want you to meet Ryland Grace.”
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Ryland Grace has successfully arrived at Tau Ceti and has made contact with an alien. Now having a translating machine Rocky and Grace are now able to communicate. Can both species work together to solve the mystery of ‘astrophage?’
Which part is better? The second half of the film is the stronger part due to its emotional impacts. Not only do we get to experience the friendship that develops between Grace and Rocky, but also the scientific collaboration between them. The second half has many memorable scenes involving Rocky with the ending of the film delivering the strongest emotional payoff.
