Where does the first part end? The Decon (Dennis Hopper) speaks to his Smoker commanders on his ship the Exxon Valdez.

Final line of dialogue on the first part:

Theatrical/Extended Edition: “I say that he’s headed here and we take him here.” Decon speaks as he points to a nautical map.

First line of dialogue on the second part:

Theatrical Edition: ‘Drifter?’ Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) asks the Mariner (Kevin Costner).

Extended Edition: “How long before we get some wind?” Helen asks Mariner.

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, the Mariner, Helen, and Enola have escaped Atoll and are struggling to survive due to low supplies. The Decon looks to capture Enola, as she is the key to finding Dryland. Will the Decon be successful in capturing Enola?

Which part is better? Part two is significantly better in either version, as we begin to learn more about the main protagonists (the Mariner, Helen, and Enola) as they struggle to survive on the Mariner’s trimaran. Part two also unravels the mystery of the fabled Dryland.
