Where does the first part end? Maria leaves Von Trapp mansion, after The Baroness confronts her about Von Trapps feelings towards Maria.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: No dialogue, Maria leaves a note on a table in the main foyer and exits the mansion.
First line of dialogue on the second part: “Three, Four, Five, Six” The Baroness plays a game outside the mansion with the Von Trapp children.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, Maria has made great rapport with the Von Trapp family during her stay. But the Baroness has noticed affection between Maria and Von Trapp. Maria chooses to leave the Von Trapp mansion. How will her absence impact the Von Trapp children?
Which part is better? Both parts have redeemable qualities, part one shows the relationship between Maria and the Von Trapp family. Maria’s love of music helps to bring the Von Trapp family together. Part two brings the struggles of Nazi occupation in Austria which threatens to split the Von Trapp family apart. Although part two has more turmoil due to the Nazi occupation, the edge goes to part one which displays the positive impacts Maria has on the Von Trapp family and also the memorable performances of songs such as “The Sound of Music, My Favourite Things, and Do-Re-Mi.”
