Where does the first part end? Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) falls in and out of consciousness, he is feverish. His wounds are tended to by a Pawnee Indian who preforms a healing ritual.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: “But if you watch the trunk, you will see its stability” Hugh hears his wife’s voice as he passes out.
First line of dialogue on the second part: No Dialogue- Hugh dreams, in his dream he is reunited with his late son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck).
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, the amount of pain and agony Hugh has been through both physically and mentally up until this point in the film, make us wonder how he manages to keep going. Will Hugh make it back to the American outpost or will his wounds overtake him?
Which part is better? The brutally of the early 19th century is clearly presented throughout the film. At times it is hard to imagine the hardships experienced by frontiersman during this period. Throughout the film Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy (who plays the character John Fitzgerald) both provide Oscar winning performances. It is difficult to determine a better part in this film, but a slight edge goes to part two as it provides the bitter sweet conclusion to tragedy.
