Where does the first part end? Tom Rath (Gregory Peck) speaks with his wife Batsy Rath (Jennifer Jones) in their bedroom.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: “What to you care, you had it,” Batsy responds to Tom who questions her current chickenpox illness.
First line of dialogue on the second part: “You’ll have your name here sometime this afternoon,” states Gordon Walker (Arthur O’Connell) as he walks with Bill Ogden (Henry Daniell) and Tom Rath. Tom has accepted his new public relations job at the UBC television network.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Tom Rath works diligently to support his wife and three children. He has successfully completed his job application, but is still waiting for an offer from the UBC television network. His wife Batsy is excited for Tom’s opportunity
Which part is better? Part one shows flashbacks of Tom’s past as a solider in World War II. These past events continue to effect Tom daily as he provides for his family. In part two Tom begins his new job at UBC, but finds it increasingly difficult to find a work/life balance. Part two is given the edge, as we see Tom adjust to his new job, as well as sudden life curveballs that he is faced with. Many of us can sympathize with Tom as we too can have moments where there might be no work/life or be faced with a life event we did not expect.
