Where does the first part end? Clopin (Ernest Torrence) and Don Claudio ( Nigel De Brulier) discuss a possible uprising, as well as, Esmeralda’s (Patsy Ruth Miller) future.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: “The hour for an uprising is not yet! There lacks the spark to make my people flame,” states Don Claudio.
First line of dialogue on the second part: A title card states “Angelus,” Quasimodo (Lon Chaney) then rings the bells of Notre Dame.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, Esmeralda is involved in a lovers triangle between Fleur de Lys (Winifred Bryson) and Phoebus (Norman Kerry). Phoebus (a captain within King Louis XI’s Archers) is considered to be an aristocrat, which appeals to Esmeralda. However Esmeralda is of the lower class making their relationship a struggle between class systems.
Which part is better? Part two is better as we not only witness the epic conclusion with the storming of Notre Dame, but also Quasimodo’s character transition from a feared outcast to a sympathetic figure.
