Final line of dialogue on the first part:
Theatrical/Extended: “Send out word there is a price on their heads,” Azog shouts at his Warg riders
First line of dialogue on the second part:
Theatrical: A shot of Rivendell at night. Dwarf’s are eating around a fire. A dwarf speaks “I’d rather you didn’t.”
Extended: Bilbo (Martin Freeman) explores Rivendell during the day. Elrond (Hugo Weaving) walks towards Bilbo and asks “Not with your companions?”
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, Azog is on the trail of Thorin and company. Will Bilbo, the Dwarves, and Gandalf the Grey be safe in Riverdell? Will they make it to the Lonely Mountain safely?
Which part is better? Part one introduces the 15 protagonist characters who will forgo the journey towards the Lonely Mountain. The second part documents the journey following the departure from Riverdale to escaping Moria. Part two is better as we not only confrontation with the Orcs inside and outside of Moria, but also the much anticipated interaction between Bilbo and Gollum (Andy Serkis), with Bilbo obtaining the ‘one ring.’
