Part 1 Time:  80 Minutes

Part 2 Time:  73 Minutes

Where does the first part end? Julio Desnoyers (Glenn Ford) and Marguerite Laurier (Ingrid Thulin) speak outside of the Palace of Versailles.

Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Etienne is a prisoner of war,” states Marguerite as they embrace each other.

First line of dialogue on the second part: The opening scene of part two does not have dialogue, as it shows a resistance uprising. Dialogue then commences in the next scene as the secretary to Karl von Hartrott (Paul Lukas) welcomes Julio and Marcelo (Charles Boyer) stating; “Yes. he’ll see you now.”

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, with France now occupied by the Nazi’s, Julio offers to arrange Marguerite safe passage to Argentina under the assumption that she is and Argentinean wife. Will she take up Julio’s offer?

Which part is better? The film centres around the Nazi occupation of France and the leeway (neutrality) that Argentinean’s had within the state. Part two is better as Julio decides to join the French resistance partaking in various missions in an attempt to overthrow Nazi rule.
