Where does the first part end? Costello (Jack Nicholson) speaks with Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) and Queenan (Martin Sheen) at the pier. Dignam and Queenan wonder where the missile guidance microchips are.

Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Excuse me. Got a date with some angels.” Costello speaks with Dignam and Queenan.

First line of dialogue on the second part: “Frankie, Frankie, your mother forgives me.” The 1935 film ‘The Informer‘ plays of the television in the living room of the Kneecapped Bankrobber (Joseph Riccobene).

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, at this point in the film the plot takes a drastic turn from pursuing the Costello mob to discovering the true identity of a possible mole within the BPD (Boston Police Department). Will the mole within BPD be discovered? How will Billy (Leonardo DiCaprio) be able to balance his hidden identity within the Costello crew?

Which part is better? The film was not intended to have an official intermission due to the quick screen transitions and presence of music/sound effects, but there is a clear change in the films overall plot. Part two is better as we see Billy frequently balance a fine line between being undercover and a member of the Costello crew. The last 15 minutes of the film are a must see as we see the final events unfold.
