Where does the first part end? Jonas Cord (George Peppard) visits Monica Winthrop (Elizabeth Ashley) in the hospital.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: Monica Winthrop states “Oh you know exactly what I mean Jonas Cord Jr.”
First line of dialogue on the second part: “Seven or eight years went by. The world was crippled by the crash and the depression, everyone suffered from it, except Jonas he was above it,” Narrator (Paul Frees) introduces the second half of the film.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, with Jonas’ focus solely on his companies, his personal relationships begin to deteriorate.
Which part is better? The film is loosely based on the historical figure Howard Hanks (who was an entrepreneur in both the aerospace and film industries). Part one, introduces Jonas Cord a workaholic business tycoon who continues to diversify his portfolio. In part two, Jonas begins to face numerous obstacles with his many working and personal relationships, which results in the reinstating of past traumas. As a result part two is given a minimal advantage.
