Where does the first part end?  Cardinal Glennon (John Huston) and Stephen Fermoyle (Tom Tryon) speak. Stephen is having a crisis of faith due to the guilt of his sisters death.

Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Will you do this much for me and yourself?” states Cardinal Glennon.

First line of dialogue on the second part:  It is now 1924 in Vienna, Austria Stephen is now working sabbatical as a lecturer “Because of the holiday, we won’t be meeting again for two weeks” Stephen announces to the class.

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Stephen is currently having a crisis of faith and asks for guidance. Will he leave the Catholic faith? Due to the title of the film an accurate prediction can be made.

Which part is better? Part two, is far superior due to the content presented. In this part, we see Stephen begin to move up the Roman Catholic hierarchy as he is faced with a magnitude scenarios, such as, the issue of segregation, white supremacy and the invasion of the Nazi army.
