Where does the first part end? Shannon (Nina Hoss) and Lydia(Cate Blanchett) lie in bed, discussing tomorrow’s cello audition.

Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Of course, have to follow the rules,” replies Shannon.

First line of dialogue on the second part: “Aren’t we being a bit formal, Francesca?” states Lydia as they prepare for the cello audition.

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Lydia’s blatant favouritism towards Olga (Sophie Kauer) is being noticed by many members within the orchestra as well as those close to Lydia. What impact will this have Lydia’s legacy within the musical community

Which part is better?  The film is a slow burner, which focuses primarily on the complex relationships among characters. It takes quite a bit of time to understand how Lydia thinks and rationalises her thoughts, which ultimately brings forth controversy and negatively affects her legacy. Part two is better as we begin to see Lydia’s career begin to spiral out of control.
