Where does the first film end? Liu Kang (Robin Shou), Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), Katina (Talisa Soto) and Lord Raiden (Christopher Lambert) return to Earth’s Shaolin temple where a victory celebration is taking place. The celebration is cut short as the Outworld Emperor appears and states he has come for everyone’s souls.
Final line of dialogue on the first film: “I don’t think so!” Raiden states as Earth’s warriors take up fighting stances.
First line of dialogue on the second film: The film begins with a quick montage of the events from the last film. Lord Raiden (James Remar) narrates “Mortal Kombat is not about death, but rather the preservation of life.”
How jarring is it when the first film ends? Very jarring, the first film leaves the audience on quite a cliffhanger as the Outworld Emperor prepares to take the realm of Earth by force. Will Earth’s warriors be able to defeat the powers of the Outworld Emperor and save Earth?
Which film is better? It is quite a shame that Mortal Kombat: Annihilation did not live up to its predecessor. Not only did Annihilation lose many of it’s key actors, but the story-line and GCI severely lacked from the first film. The first film is far superior as it follows a simple tournament style with predictable matches and outcomes. Whereas Annihilation is a jumbled mess of a film that is less fun and more painful to sit through.
