Part 2 Time:  61 Minutes

Where does the first part end? It is the next morning following the death of Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson). Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) stands on a balcony overlooking Venice, Italy.

Final line of dialogue on the first part: No dialogue, as Ethan reflects on Ilsa’s death. The film’s musical score fades following this scene transition.

First line of dialogue on the second part: “I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten your name” Grace (Hayley Atwell) speaks to Luther (Ving Rhames).

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Jarring, disavowed MI6 agent Ilsa Faust has been killed by Gabriel (Esai Morales). Her death comes at a great cost to Ethan and his operatives team as they regroup following this setback. Will Ethan and his operatives team be able to locate the precise location of the ‘Entity (a weaponized AI device)?’

Which part is better? The film moves at an extremely fast pace, with multiple action scenes in both halves. In part one, Ethan and his operatives team travel to the locations of Yemen, Abu Dhabi, Rome, and Venice to locate the two pieces of the cruciform key. Besides the death of Ilsa Faust, not much plot development happens in part one. Part two, takes place on the Orient Express where many competing groups look to take control of the cruciform key. This part revisits what the ‘Entity’ is and which groups are looking to harness its power. For this reason, the second half of the film is superior
