A thespian by nature, Laurence Olivier is considered one of the greatest dramatic actors of the 20th century. His dramatic spectrum was second to none, having the ability to combine “humour with the qualities of sorrow, majesty, despair, or evil” (Hutchonson, 2019, pp. 1). With his background of classical acting relating to the Shakespearean art-form, Olivier was able to adapt the classical works of Hamlet, Othello, Richard III and Henry V successfully into motion picture formats. His career achievements have been recognized and given the highest accolades, including two honorary awards (Academy Awards), an Academy Fellowship Award (BAFTA), and numerous best acting awards. His impression on the acting profession can still be felt well into the 21st century and will continue to be studied by both stage and motion picture actors or years to come.
