Where does the first part end? Daniel (Jesse Plemons) and Liz (Emma Stone) embrace each other. Afterwards film credits roll showing dogs partaking in various activities, indicating the end of the second story
Final line of dialogue on the first part: There is no dialogue in the last scene of part one, thus the final line of dialogue is stated in the scene prior when Daniel states to Liz, “Or… your liver It’s full of iron, liver. Ultra-nutritious. That’s what they say. And that’s what I need to eat today because I’m feeling weak.”
First line of dialogue on the second part: The third story entitled R.M.F. Eats Sandwich begins with Emily (Emma Stone) who commands Anna (Hunter Schafer) to; “Step on the scale please. Good. Stand up straight.”
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, as the film is a compilation of three separate stories, thus the ending of story two R.M.F. Is Flying does not impact the third story R.M.F. Eats Sandwich.
Which part is better? The film explores various relationships and power dynamics we experience throughout life with each actor taking on a different role in each story. The first story (The Death of R.M.F.) explores the toxic power dynamics between an employee and an employer. The second story (R.M.F. Is Flying) highlights the fantasies we create about people within our relationships. The last story (R.M.F. Eats Sandwich) focuses on complex relationships between faith and community. All in all, each story is unique in both its humour and cinematic delivery. Part one is better as both stories are intriguing and thought provoking.
