Where does the first part end? Rev. Abner Hale gets his gets leg bitten by a shark after attempting to free Iliki from Capt. Rafer Hoxworth’s Ship. Hale is brought safely back to his shelter where Dr. John Whipple assures Jerusha that Abner will survive .

Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Sleep” Jerusha states to Abner at bedside.

First line of dialogue on the second part: “Can you take this mail over to Hale please?” Messenger passes mail to deliverer at the Lahaina Hotel during the 1828 Kamehameha Anniversary.

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Jarring, Abner and the Hawaiian islanders’ have undergone an attack by Captain Hoxworth who’s group disagrees with the new rules set forth on Lahaina, Maui. Abner attempts to rescue Iliki but he is injured by a shark. How will these events affect the future of the inhabitants on Lahaina, Maui.

Which part is better? Part one documents Abner and Jerusha’s voyage to Hawaii and the early establishment of permanent settlements with the Hawaiian peoples. Part two shows the impacts of disease and conquest caused by the European/American settlements on Hawaii. Although part one has many redeeming qualities part two is better since it brings Abner and Jerusha’s story full circle and shows the negative affects of non-Hawaiian establishments.
