Where does the first part end? Grace continues to work hard for the citizens of Dogville, however things are becoming increasing unbearable for Grace (Nicole Kidman).
Final line of dialogue on the first part: Narrator (John Hurt) speaks “Everyone had covered up for he, including chuck, who had to admit that it was probably Tom’s hat he’d mistakenly considered so suspicious”
First line of dialogue on the second part: Part Seven begins, Narrator speaks “That evening Tom had sensed at once, that something had taken place, but had to plead with Grace for ages before she finally broke down and unburdened herself.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, Grace has worked hard to successfully gain the trust of the citizen’s of Dogville. However Grace’s status as a missing person is causing fear among the Dogville residents, who begin unlawful and undesirable acts towards Grace. Will Grace continue to stay in Dogville or leave and risk being captured by the Big Man (James Caan)?
Which part is better? The film is depicted in non typical Hollywood film style, but rather as a parable with a very minimal stage-like set. The story explores the idea of stoicism but also the impacts of capitalism. In part one, the audience is introduced to Grace who is looking for a fresh start in a new town. She begins to prove herself as contributor to Dogville. In part two, Grace is faced with hardships and undesirable acts caused by most members of Dogville. Part two is better as the ideal of stoicism is brought full circle. Grace struggles to accept what she has been put through and what justice she should mandate to those who have wronged her.
