Where does the first part end? Che Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) and Castro-led Cuban operatives drive in a jeep toward Havana, celebrating their successful revolution and topple of the Bastista regime.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Unbelievable” states Che out loud, referring to how some of the revolutionists are acting following their victory.
First line of dialogue on the second part: Part two begins with no dialogue, but rather a map of Bolivia highlighting key areas. The map then expands to other countries within South America. The first line of dialogue shows Fidel (Demian Bichir) speaking from a television stating “He who merits, through qualification and virtue, the highest ranks is, however, not counted amount the members of our Central Committee.”
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Che Guevara and Castro-led Cuban exiles have successfully toppled the Batista regime. But Che has plans to continue helping other repressed Latin American countries obtain freedom. Will Che be successful in abolishing of dictator regimes?
Which part is better? The entire film is very slow moving documenting the day-to-day operations and struggles of guerrilla warfare. Part one focuses on Che’s involvement in the Cuban revolution. Part two is set in the South American country of Bolivia, where Che looks to aid freedom fighters against the Barrientos government. Part one is better as we are able to see Che grow as an inspiring leader and global figurehead among those who are repressed. We see the tactics used by Che in maneuvering a successful revolution
