Where does the first part end? Gen. Kohler (Werner Peters) and Col. Martin Hessler (Robert Shaw) discuss the status of the current German counteroffensive.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: “You have until 0400, that is all.” Gen.Kohler concludes his conversation with Col. Martin Hessler.
First line of dialogue on the second part: “We have silenced their guns, now we will attack.” Col. Martin Hessler explains to his German subordinates.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Somewhat, the German counteroffensive led by a column of Tiger II heavy tanks has caught the Allies off guard. The Allies regroup, trying to prevent the counteroffensive from overtaking the gains made by the Allies since the Normandy landings.
Which part is better? Both parts display the war strategy of the Allies and Germans as well as the battle itself. This battle is a must win for the Germans, who have began to suffer huge losses on the Western Front. Part two is given an edge as we see the conclusion to the battle.
