Part 2 Time:   100 Minutes (TCM Print: 99 Minutes) (Re-edit: N/A minutes)

***The VHS format splits the two tapes at 86 minutes with James (Ralph Richardson) and Edmund (Dean Stockwell) returning home. This transition is somewhat sloppy as it falls in the middle of the scene.

Where does the first part end? Everyone has left the house. Mary (Katharine Hepburn) has been left alone. Will Mary succumb to her substance abuse issues while everyone is away?

Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Then mother of God, why do I feel so lonely?” Mary speaks to herself while sitting on the staircase.

First line of dialogue on the second part: “That foghorn! isn’t it awful, Cathleen?’ Mary speaks to Cathleen (Jeanne Barr) at half past 6 in the evening in the living room. Both have returned from the drugstore.

How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Mary is left home alone to her own devices as Jamie, Ralph, and Edmund have left. How will Mary handle this time alone with herself?

Which part is better? Although both parts have great points of dialogue among each character, part two is better as it brings to light the multiple issues plaguing the Tyrone family through the uncomfortable conversations that each character avoided having earlier in the film.
