Where does the first part end? Christopher Columbus (Gérard Depardieu) speaks with his brothers Guevara (Fernando Guillén Cuervo) and Bartholomew (Steven Waddington) on the balcony preparing for his second exposition to the new world.
Final line of dialogue on the first part: “Then we can count on royal health!” Christopher Columbus jokes about having a royal physician join the second voyage to the new world.
First line of dialogue on the second part: The second exposition arrives in the new world. They use drumming to alert the Spanish colonizers who stayed back from the first voyage. “Fire” state Columbus trying to get the colonizers attention.
How jarring is it when the first part ends? Minimal, Christopher Columbus has now gained fame in Spain, being the first Spanish explorer to reach the new world. He prepares for the second exposition, but is suspicious of the Spanish nobility and their involvement in the future colonization. Will the second exposition of the new world be as successful as the first?
Which part is better? Part one shows both the struggles faced by Columbus in gaining investment and support in searching for a new trade route to Asia as well as the first exposition to the new world. The second part focuses on the second exposition and its aftermath. A slight edge goes to part two as we begin to see the fall out between the colonizers and the local natives.
